A Harvest of Vintage Wisconsin

In lov­ing mem­o­ry of leg­endary author and men­tor, Wisconsin’s own Jer­ry Apps, the Wis­con­sin Writ­ers Asso­ci­a­tion held a con­test to col­lect the best of Wis­con­sin sto­ries. The con­test was judged by Jerry’s daugh­ter, Susan Apps-Bod­il­ly, and this anthol­o­gy com­pris­es about half the total entries. It shares the heart of Wis­con­sin fam­i­ly tra­di­tions, from open­ing the sum­mer cab­in on the lake to shar­ing the work on its dairy farms; from fish­ing and hunt­ing its lakes and forests to per­se­ver­ing through the hard times of Pro­hi­bi­tion and the Great Depres­sion. You’ll expe­ri­ence the fine art of smelt­ing a riv­er in the spring, mak­ing cheese in America’s Dairy­land and rem­i­nisc­ing about the restau­rants, build­ings, and the immi­grants from Europe who came here seek­ing a bet­ter way of life.

Wisconsin’s pride of place, its long­stand­ing envi­ron­men­tal con­scious­ness, and its sym­bols of nature and his­to­ry like Old Abe the war eagle are all here in this vol­ume of A Har­vest of Vin­tage Wis­con­sin.
